Not being authentic is a waste of time and energy.
I was looking for a sense of direction to move my career forward when I started with the Collective Leadership programme. I really liked the programme’s emphasis on being authentic. It’s very powerful when you recognise the strengths in your authentic self. I realised that, like many people and particularly women, I tried to demonstrate and show more “masculine” leadership styles so that I would fit in. This programme encouraged me to be more authentic and bring my whole self to work.
This learning coincided with a Women in Leadership training course and helped me to step up, create and lead a diversity and inclusion group in my former company. I am a strong advocate of diversity and inclusion and encouraging all to consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) careers and realise their potential.
I learned that not being authentic is a waste of time and energy, so I look for organisations I believe in and in which I can be my real self. When I am true to myself, I feel I can contribute more and that I am creating more energy whilst using less energy.
